How expensive is "free"?

Can something be truly free?

“Free” is an overused word

Muninn is currently free. There is no subscription, no one-time payment until much later (and you can bet your butt you’ll be grandfathered in), and no selling of your data.

I am financially in a well off enough state to just work on this in my spare time, mostly to scratch my own itches, and release it. A small (think ‘less than a cup of coffee’) one-time payment may (or may not) be added to cover things such as my Apple Developer subscription and, maybe, some help buying new devices to test Huginn and Muninn on, but all in all I am not in this to make money.

But how “free” is that? I could stop working on it tomorrow, there’s no contract between us, not even an explicit promise to keep working on the app. So, let’s define freedom, shall we? (Greater Men and Women have failed this).

The code will be freed.

If I disappear tomorrow, if the app stops working, if I stop working on it, there’s a Repo with the code that will become available 30 days later. No commits, no working on it, no progress – the source code is yours. Simple promise, hold me to it.

Your Data Are Yours

All the data you provide to Muninn are yours and remain under your control. Whatever Muninn writes stays on your devices and can be read in plain text JSON. If I ever disappear all it takes are 10 lines of Python and your data can go wherever you go.
